How to Care for Your Laminate Countertop

Highly affordable and available in a wide range of colours and patterns, laminate countertops are a popular option when it comes creating kitchens that are functional and stylish.

While not quite as durable as countertops made from other materials, laminate can last for up to a decade with proper care and maintenance. Here’s what you need to know.

What is laminate?
Laminate is a product made from pressed particle board that’s covered with a layer of plastic to create a smooth, flat surface. One of the biggest advantages of using this building material is that it’s versatile and inexpensive.

The don’ts
Taking precautionary measures will ensure that your laminate countertop remains in great shape throughout its lifespan. For this reason, here are some things to keep off its surface.

• Hot things. Pans and appliances used for cooking can burn the surface of a laminate countertop. Trivets and hot pads are a necessity if you have laminate in your kitchen.

• Harsh cleaners. These can react with the laminate finish and dull it, leaving behind blemishes on the surface.

• Abrasive materials. Abrasive pads and steel wool will scratch the finish and cause a similar kind of dulling as harsh cleaners will.

• Knives. Laminate countertops aren’t cutting boards, and most kitchen knives are more than capable of slicing the laminate. Even very fine cuts in the surface can make it difficult to properly clean and sanitize.

The dos
Keeping a laminate countertop clean without damaging it is as simple as wiping it down with a bit of dish soap and water. The key is to clean it daily. This will prevent dirt and food residue from building up and reduce the need for stronger cleaning products, which may be required to handle more stubborn messes.

If your countertops do become stained, don’t despair. Repeated washings with mild soap and water will typically result in a clean surface, although it may take a bit longer. You may also be able to use a combination of baking soda and water to lift the stain, depending on the specific material and how stubborn the stain is.
